Training and Education Program in Cognitive Therapy
In order to be of benefit to all psychotherapists who practice in Turkey,
this program has two tracks and two levels of participation.

The two tracks are:

  1. General clinical psychotherapy skills, and
  2. Cognitive Therapy

The two levels of participation are for mental health professionals with a:

  1. Bachelor’s degree and above, and
  2. Master’s degree and above.

The basic intent of the overall program is to develop knowledgeable and
skilled psychotherapists with a high degree of practioner-level ability in
both general clinical psychotherapy and Beckian Cognitive Therapy.

As indicated at the conclusion of this summary, it is expected that
participants who successfully meet all of the goals of the program will be
prepared to earn certification as Cognitive Therapists by the Academy of
Cognitive Therapy (ACT) in the United States.

Overall Goals
General Clinical Psychotherapy skills for any therapeutic orientation:
Requirements:

  • Bachelor degree or above in psychology, psychiatry, or related field
  • Working in mental health field

Goals:

Attainment of competence in:

  • Assessment and diagnosis, including
  • The ability to anticipate potential need for psychiatric treatment (medicine).
  • Ethics and professionalism.
  • Establishment of a therapeutic relationship.
  • Development and application of a treatment plan.
  • Integration of theory with practice (the ability to use theory to heal patients).
  • Patient-focus.
For practicing therapists with, or wishing to develop, a Cognitive Therapy orientation:
Requirements:

  • Master degree in psychology, psychiatry, or related field.
  • Working as a therapist in the mental health field.

Goals:

To help prepare the therapist to obtain certification as a Cognitive Therapist by the Academy of Cognitive
Therapy (ACT) in the United States (note that the ACT has its own specific
minimum prerequisites for
application). This is to be accomplished through the development of competence in the following areas:

  • Basic principles of Cognitive Therapy (CT).
  • The Cognitive Therapy model in theory and practice.
  • Case conceptualization from a CT perspective.
  • CT treatment planning.
  • Structure of a CT session.
  • Establishment of a collaborative therapeutic relationship for CT.
  • Relapse prevention.
  • Basic understanding of how to apply CT in therapy with patients.
  • CT with Mood disorders.
  • CT with Anxiety disorders.
  • CT with Personality disorders.
  • Integration of CT theory with practice (the ability to use the CT theory, model, and techniques to heal
    patients):
  • Supervision
  • Requirements
  • For practicing therapists at the master level or above
  • Psychologists, psychiatrists, and other mental health field professionals
  • An ongoing practice and case load.
  • Three years, 40 hours/year, total of 120 hours.

Recommendations for application for CT certification:

  • Basic recommendations:
  • General Clinical Psychotherapy Skills classes.
  • Basic CT skills classes.
  • CT classes for mood, anxiety, and personality disorders.
  • 80 hours CT-oriented supervision.
  • For therapists who obtain all of the above plus an additional 40 hours (total 120) of supervision from Dr.
    Stroup will receive:
  • A certificate verifying completion of the entire program of education and training.
  • Consideration for the personal endorsement by Dr. Stroup of their application for certification by the
    ACT.

Dr. Stroup recommends that therapists who complete the above program continue to attend supervision and/or
regular consultation sessions in order to broaden and share their experience and skills with the growing
community of professional Cognitive Therapists in Turkey.
